Established in 1954 by parents who desired a better quality of life for their children with a developmental disability, the Foundation For Exceptional Children became a program of CHD in 2000. The Foundation For Exceptional Children is dedicated to providing a "non-public" school, supportive educational program for children with special needs. The program offers specialized classroom and recreational opportunities five days a week, eleven months a year. A weekday summer program is offered in June and July. Recreational, social, and educational activities for children with physical and mental impairments are provided in classrooms outfitted with specialized equipment, furniture and toys. A lovely and secure waterfront back yard with playscape and playground equipment completes safe and clean environment that provides the training and discipline children need. Teachers, aides and community volunteers lead small class sizes that meet the needs of individuals. Physical, occupational, speech and music therapists augment the staff.
